24 Clicks, A Birthday Reflection
Ever since I turned 21, I’ve made it a tradition to look back at the past year, check in with myself, and reflect on how much I’ve grown and where I’m at. It’s my little birthday ritual where I take stock of what’s changed, what I’ve learned, and set some intentions for the year ahead. This year has been especially wild, full of so many unexpected moments, and I feel like it’s one of the most transformative years I’ve had so far. At 24, I’m stepping out of the teenage years and into adulthood, and the lessons I’ve learned this year have been huge—not just about my work, but about myself and the people around me.
So here are 24 things I’ve learned about photography, life, and myself:
1. Things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay.
If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be focusing mostly on corporate and sports photography, I would’ve never believed it. But life is full of surprises, and sometimes, the journey takes you somewhere you didn’t expect but end up loving.
2. I never realised how much joy work would bring me.
Even in the most boring meetings where I might tune out, I find myself smiling and happy. And when I’m stressed, I’m still grateful because I truly enjoy what I do.
3. I’m incredibly grateful for the freedom and flexibility in my lifestyle.
Even though there are moments where I need to prioritise work over friendships, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything. It allows me to live in a different country, build an amazing group of friends, and be happy on my own, all while doing what I love—photography.
4. The photography community’s support has been overwhelming.
As an introverted person, I never imagined I’d find such a safe space filled with people who are constantly willing to help, encourage, and uplift me. Especially in sports photography, a field that’s traditionally male-dominated, I feel accepted and supported.
5. Being a photographer is not as simple as it seems.
People think you just show up to an event, take some pictures, and then you’re done. But as a freelancer, you’re constantly working—answering emails at 11 PM, finding clients on Instagram, updating your website, and editing photos. The work never truly stops.
6. The gear you have doesn’t define how good your photos are.
Sure, it helps, but it’s about using the gear you’re comfortable with and knowing it well. Sometimes the best shots come from knowing your tools, not necessarily having the most expensive equipment.
7. People will value your work in ways you didn’t expect.
One of the greatest compliments I receive is when people say my photos have soul. I’ve always wanted my work to be more than just a snapshot; I want it to evoke emotion. And to hear that from others makes me feel so grateful.
8. Not every session will go as planned, and that’s okay.
Even on the days when you think your work isn’t perfect, you’re still learning and growing. There’s always something positive to take away from every experience.
9. You don’t need to know every technical detail to be a great photographer.
For me, it’s about following my gut and trusting my instincts. Sometimes, technical perfection takes a back seat to capturing the real moments.
10. Learning about taxes and the legal side of freelancing was a wake-up call.
I never thought I’d have to deal with those aspects of my business, but it’s a crucial part of being a professional photographer. Managing my income and understanding the tax system has been a learning curve, but I’m getting the hang of it.
11. The most unexpected things can turn into business opportunities.
I’ve met clients in the most random places—strangers at a coffee shop, at a party, or even just walking down the street. You never know when you’ll meet your next client, so always be ready.
12. I still have a creative side that I want to nurture more.
Sometimes, it’s hard to find the time or energy to focus on personal creative projects, but I’m learning to prioritise that side of myself moving forward.
13. Photography is an ongoing transition.
My style is constantly evolving, and I go through phases where I try new things or go back to old ones. That’s part of the beauty of it—I’m always learning, adapting, and growing.
14. You’ll never know everything. And that’s okay.
It’s a continuous learning process. Photography, like life, is full of surprises, and you never stop discovering new things.
15. Networking is key.
The more people you meet, the more opportunities come your way. And I’ve learned that in this business, relationships are everything.
16. You have to be willing to make sacrifices.
Not just time, but sometimes personal comfort and even relationships. But it’s all worth it when you see the results of your hard work.
17. There’s always something new to learn.
Whether it’s about the technical side of photography, new trends, or business management. I love that there’s never a dull moment.
18. Confidence in your work is important.
I’ve learned to trust my skills and stop second-guessing myself. And when you do that, people notice.
19. Patience is key.
Whether it’s waiting for the perfect moment to click the shutter or building your business, good things take time.
20. You can’t please everyone, and that’s okay.
Not everyone will love your work, but as long as you’re true to yourself, that’s what matters most.
21. Collaboration is powerful.
Working with other creatives has opened up so many new opportunities and ideas I would have never thought of on my own.
22. Your journey is your own.
Everyone has a different path, and that’s something to celebrate. It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but once you embrace your unique journey, things start to fall into place.
23. Keep challenging yourself.
Don’t settle for mediocrity. Keep pushing your boundaries and strive for improvement in every shoot, every project, and every year.
24. Be kind to yourself.
The road to success isn’t always smooth, but every step you take, no matter how small, is progress. Celebrate the little victories along the way.
As I reflect on all the lessons learned, my birthday wish for this year is simple: to continue doing what I love—documenting those special, fleeting moments that tell unique stories. Whether it’s capturing the love at a wedding, the energy of a sports event, or the quiet beauty of everyday life, I’m excited to keep sharing my journey with all of you.
The support I’ve received from friends, family, clients, and the incredible photography community has been beyond anything I ever expected, and I’m so deeply grateful. Your encouragement and belief in my work mean the world to me, and it’s what keeps me inspired to keep pushing forward. Here’s to another year of growth, creativity, and beautiful memories captured through the lens!
